Cats owners keep on searching the best and the most nutritious cat food for their furry kids. Some said dried food better as it contains higher quantity of protein; some claim wet food is better in nutrition. Let's understand how to calculate the nutrition in dry and wet food.
Before we begin, you shall understand that different kind of food contains different quantities of moisture, so to compare their nutritional value you need to calculate the dry matter of the food. Below is the example:
Food X: wet food with 8% protein and 80% moisture
Food Y: dry food with 32% protein and 8% moisture
At first glance, food B looks like a much better option because of its high protein content, but to find the actual protein value, you need to do this equation:
Protein Value = (Protein content X100)/Dry matter content
Dry matter content = 100 - moisture content
By referring Food X and Food Y as sample, let's calculate the actual protein content:
Food X: 8 (protein content) X 100 divided by 20 (dry matter, in this case is 100-80) = 40%
Food Y: 32 X100 divided by 92 (100-8) = 35%
In conclusion, when buying or considering food for your furry cats, you shall not rely fully on the cat food label. Calculation shall take place to get the actual quantity of your cat's food!
