Training Your Cats III - Teaching Your Cats to Do Tricks
Cats are not only capable of learning simple commands: they enjoy interaction with their owner too. So as not to confuse them, work with one command at a time.Be consistent and patient, letting your cat work at its own speed. Reward the cat enthusiastically at the first sign of understanding. You may also teach them other tricks include:
Come
With a food treat in hand and preferably when your cat is hungry, call 'come'. As it comes to investigate, praise it and give it the treat. The cat will quickly learn to associate the food with the command. Never call a cat to punish him or to do something that he does not enjoy.
Shake-'hand'
Not only that dogs know how to shake paw, cats can do that as well. With your cat sitting in front of you, touch his paw and say 'shake'. As soon as it lifts the paw, shake it and give him a treat and praise.
Sit Up
With your cat in a sitting position, hold a treat over its head and say 'sit up'. Do not give him the reward if it stands or grabs at the treat but repeat the command and try again. When it sits up, give it the treat immediately.
Playing Fetch
To teach fetch, it helps if your cat has an oral fixation. It should like carrying things around in its mouth. If you notice a kitten walking around with a toy in its mouth, give it plenty of praise. The more excited your cat is about the fetch object, the more likely it will 'grab' it and carry it away. Throw the toy and command 'fetch'. Unlike teaching other tricks, a food reward is less effective in encouraging a cat to fetch. The reward is that the object is thrown again. The cat must enjoy the game of fetch or else it will simply chase the ball without returning it to you.
Agility Training & Competition
A new competition offered at some cat shows is called cat agility. Similar to dog agility, a cat and its handler negotiate an obstacle course designed to demonstrate the cat's athletic ability, speed, coordination and the quality of the animal's training relationship with the owner. The event is timed, with points taken off for obstacles missed or incomplete. Typical obstacles include ramps, platforms, tunnels, jumps, hoop, weave poles and steps.

Training Your Cats II - Ways to Get Rid of Unwanted Behaviors
Cats often show a few undesirable behaviors. Following are some of the way to train your cats：
Biting
Unwarranted biting is not acceptable from your cat under any circumstances. If it happens again, pinch the cat's tongue and hold on for a few seconds.
Jumping Up On Counters
Jumping on kitchen counters can be very dangerous - your cat could walk on a hot stove top. If your cat jumps up when you are there, keep a spray bottle handy and spritz the cat as it is in mid-leadp. If it jumps up only when it thinks you are not looking, watch unobserved and just as it is thinking of jumping up again, blow a whistle.
I often have this problem with all my cats. Worse, my table top is in black, I could clearly see their hair sticking on top of the counter. I often handle this by raising up my voice by saying either 'No' or 'Harrrr' when they are on my table top (harrr... works better for me). They will quickly move down from there then.
Digging In the House Plants
A cat may be tempted to use the dirt in a plant pot as a little tray. Simply fill the top of the container with small stones.
Scratching On Furniture
The best thing you can do for your furniture us to train your kitten to use a scratching post. Place several scratching posts conveniently around the house. Praise the cat when it uses them. If a kitten starts to scratch in furniture, say 'No' loudly and take it to claw furniture, spritz it with water or startle it by tossing a newspaper or car keys toward it. If you cover up a favorite scratching spot with aluminum foil or double-sided tape, a cat will often be discouraged. In fact, you may get the special double sided sticking tape from Diso (selling for RM5 only). A mild menthol, vinegar, or citrus scent also repels some cats. Once your cat realizes that these places are not fun to scratch, it will prefer the scratching post.
Inappropriate Urination
If your cat is urinating or defecating outside the litter tray, a veterinary checkup is necessary to eliminate a possible medical reason. If there is no health problems, confine the cat to a small room with a car bed at one end and a littler tray at the other. Praise your cat for using the litter tray. If you happen to catch your cat in the act of urinating or defecating outside the tray, startle it by tossing a can with a few coins inside it toward the cat (but not at it) to make it stop. You could also use a whistle or water gun. Clean the area where the cat spray before with klorox so that the smell and the stain is completely remove. If this spot is not cleaned properly, the chances where the cat will return to spray at the same spot again is very high.
Midnight Crazies
Some cats come to life at night (most actually). The cat stampedes through the house, playing with toys among them (if you have more than a cat) or by his own. They often jump up to your bed, hoping the owner will wake up and play with them. My Zafiro is exactly this kind of kitty! If your cat is too disturbing and you are unable to sleep well all night, you may think of confining him in a room during night time. You may also try to change his activity pattern by cutting down his sleeping time at day time.

Cats chew in inappropriate objects such as clothing, sofa, electrical cords or even papers. Make the object taste unpleasant by spraying Tabasco, chili, vinegar & ect.

Value Buy
Most premium cat food are sell in big packet. Although it is much cheaper by the weight and quantity, owners still prefer smaller pack of cat food due the following concern:
1. They only have 1-2 cats at home, their cats don't consume much food.
2. When their pet cats don't consume so much food, there is no point keeping the big packet of cat food for so long.
3. It's not easy to keep food air-tight. Once open, the freshness declined by day.
In order to get the best bargain, I always odd for the biggest pack of cat biscuits. Normally I will repack 6.8kg into 10-12 smaller packets.

To repack, you need to have a plastic sealer, some thick plastic bags. It's important to choose the right plastic bag.
How much cat food to put in a plastic bag? Normally i will measure the amount according to the plastic container I use to store cat biscuit. One container of cat biscuit into one plastic bag.
In the end, I will get about 10-12 packets of sealed cat biscuit.
This container last for a week for both Kusky and Kurimu.

Training Your Cats I - Positive Reinforcement
When it comes to behavior, some cats are naturally 'purrfect' while others have a little more tiger in them. Whether your cat bites your hand, plays in the middle of the night or climbs your leg while you prepare dinner, such antics require behavior modification. There are various techniques that can be used to encourage more acceptable behavior is your cat. You can even take it further and train them to perform simple tricks and agility maneuvers.
Talking about cat's behaviors, I am blessed that both Kusky and Kurimu are well behave kitty. Especially Kusky, he will sit quietly at a side to wait for his dinner to be prepared. He never show any interest in human food. He is such a well behave boy. While for Kurimu, he does not create big trouble to us as well. He only likes to take a sniff at our food, trying to find out what we are eating. Most of the time he will just walked away without tasting. One major issue that Kurimu always create is: he likes to meow loudly and wake us up if he wakes up much earlier than anyone of us!
Going back to the topic about training cats, cats are not dogs. The training techniques that work well with our canine friends are not especially effective with our feline psyche. Cats work best when rewarded with treats, so discover a food that your cat responds to as a reward. It may be a cat treat, a sliver of cooked meat or a tiny taste of chicken baby food. Of course, do not ruin their properly balanced diet. Once your cat performs the task requested, reward it with both a treat and a praise.
Your should never hit your cat as punishment, but there are other forms of discipline that are effective. A spritz of water from a spray bottle or water pistol will often discourage unwanted behaviors. The key is to not let the cat realize the spray come from you. In closer quarters, blowing in the cat's face can be an effective deterrent. The puff strength, number and duration to best fit the cat and the behavior. Loud clapping, rattling cans, imitating a cat's hiss or a blast from an air horn are also effective deterrents with some felines.

Life Stage Diets
Choose a food that is made to meet the specific nutritional requirements for the stage of life of your cat. Kittens have higher nutritional demands needed to develop and grow. As a cat enters its golden years, it can suffer from age-related problems including a weaker immune system, less efficient digestive system, decreasing senses of smell and taste, arthritis and urinary problems. Senior cats may benefits from a diet lower in phosphorus and with a moderate level of fiber to help prevent constipation and cat foods for older cats are often formulated to stimulate the senior cats' appetite.
Lifestyle Diets
Cats that go outdoors may need a food higher in protein and calories than cats living exclusively indoors. Some studies suggest as many as one but out of 4 pet cats are overweight. Commercial foods are available with reduced fat content and high protein levels that help the obese feline lose weight without losing muscle mass.
Special Diets
There are different cat foods specifically for felines with food allergies, sensitive stomach, heart or urinary problems, dental disease and coat or skin problems. Hairballs can cause vomiting and diarrhea, but specially formulated food helps improve digestion and movement is the intestines. Feeding Your Cat I
Good nutrition is the foundation of raising a healthy cat. Cats are carnivores, however an all-meat diet is not balanced. In the wild, when a cat captures a mouse, it consumes everything that is edible - flesh, organs, bones and entrails. Because the mouse is herbivorous (plant-eater), when the cat eats the stomach and intestine that contain seeds and plants, it receives the trace elements and vitamins needed for a nutritionally balanced diet.
Commercial cat foods are specially formulated to provide the cat's complete nutrition. The foods are standardized, convenient and less expensive than preparing homemade diets. The main advantage of feeding a commercial food is the assurance that the cat is eating a balanced diet that includes all the elements necessary for proper growth and development, provided it is a trust-able premium or medium range processed food.
An adult cat requires around 50 calories per 1 lb (450g) of weight per day. A very active feline may need more; a less active cat requires less. Most adult cats seem to thrive on either self feeding or being fed two meals a day. A cat's general appearance is a good indicator of whether its diet is satisfactory. A well-fed cat has good weight, a shiny coat, bright eyes and appears happy and content. Signs of poor nutrition include low body weight, dry coat, flaky skin, dull eyes, bad breath and strong smelling stools.
Changing Food
It is best to feed the new kitten the food it has been eating. If the kitten is purchased from a breeder, ask for their feeding recommendations and schedule. This is especially useful for kittens that eat multiple meals in small servings throughout the day. Dry food should be stored in a cool, dry place, either in the closed original bag or a container with an airtight lid to keep it fresh. There is some evidence that crunching on hard kibbles helps reduce tartar build up. Dry foods usually contain 8-10% water compared to 80% water in canned food, so cats fed dry food often drink more water.
Canned food and semi-moist food may be tastier than dry food but will spoil if not eaten immediately. Care should be taken to offer only as much food as the cat will finish in a single meal. Canned food should be refrigerated once opened and any leftover wet food should be thrown our after each meal.

Poisonous Cat Food
I am not sure how reliable this report is, it was reported 11 brands of cat food and dog food contain poisonous ingredients that may affect pets' health. 7 brands contain ingredient that may cause liver cancer and another 4 may cause kidney failure if consuming in long term.

What a beautiful Sphynx cat!

This little poor muchkins kept on meowing non-stop. He must be very terrified!
The percentage of success rate in producing munchkin kittens is 50%. A munchkin papa carries the gene Mm (M-munchkin; m-normal) and a munchkin mama also carries the gene Mm, may produce the following baby: MM, Mm, mM, mm. MM will not survive; Mm or mM will appear to be munchkin kittens, while mm will be a normal cat with ordinary long legs. Although Munchkin is cute, I personally think this breed should not be encouraged to mass breed. Not only that one out of every 4 kitten will die because of the genetically problem, Munchkin may also develop spine problem.

'Spotty' cat!
Not sure what kind of breed is this, looks a bit like Egyptian Mau, a bit like Ocicat... but more like Oriental (the triangular shape head). Perhaps someone could tell me what breed is this.
This is the gorgeous British Short Haired I have ever seen! Some more it's in blue, the iconic color of BSH!

1st Melaka Pet Expo 2014

Thanks to the organizer for organizing such a great event in Melaka. Although some little minor improvement needs to be done (e.g: to have a more conducive setting to prevent visitors from going into the cage area), it is in fact a great start for all the cat lovers in Melaka!
I am happy to see and to know that there are so many cat lovers in Melaka. I feel glad to have the chance to talk to cat owners and to learn from them about how to take care of cats.

I am not a judge, and I don't have much knowledge about all cat breeds. However, this cat appeared to be one of the most gorgeous Bengal I saw during the event! Love it!

Normally cat gets frighten easily by loud noises, crowd and unfamiliar places. The venue was a bit too noisy for cats. The speaker was loud, the music from upstairs bowling center was loud and I don't know where the kids get all the balloons from, the balloon kept busting! Most cats looked tense and stress, but this cat is cool, he doesn't care how noisy his/her environment is and he/she just kept sleeping as if he/she is at home.... hahahha! cute fellow!

I love short-haired cat, ASH is on my top list. This guy was getting very annoyed after the owner try to do ear cleaning for him. Look at his face, how unhappy he is!

I am not sure what make this cat keep on looking at me... do I look like a fish? Or I do smell like a fish?
I managed to talk to this cat's owner. This cat was found straying near a car wash center. When found, this cat was dirty, with some skin problem and look totally stray. After putting lots of care and love to it, it turned to be a very gorgeous kitten now! See! You don't need a pedegree, if you take care of them well, any cat will turn to be a prince or princes.

Small corner for other animals.
At first I was stunt when saw these animals, from far I thought they are skunk! After observing for a while, they have flat back, so I guess they should be badger. Can this be kept as pet? This is not endangered species? It does not carry any transmitted diseases to human being?
*Note: update on 30 April. After double confirm with the owner, it is a skunk! And today I manage to go nearer to the animal, it smells really awful!!

One of the great thing about this event: encouraging people to adopt kittens! I love this idea, it helps to save lots of unwanted/stray cats/kittens instead of occupying the shelter and in the end having to be put to sleep when the center is unable to take anymore new kittens/cats.
Lots of choices for you to choose and bring home. Most are kittens. If possible, try to adopt an adult cat instead of kitten. The possibility of kitten being adopted is higher and mostly adult cats have to end up being euthanized. Therefore save the one that has lesser chance first!
Pedigree breed could provide you some clue about the personality of your cat, domestic mix breed cat may not. However, that doesn't mean mix breed is not a good breed. Some mix breed are even smarter, more gorgeous and more attach and easily trained than pedigree.
