Cat Accesory (V) - Cat Litter

There are various kind of cat litter available in the market, these are the common one:

Clay Cat Litter
This is the most common cat litter you may find in the market. One good thing about clay cat litter is it's good at clamping thus it makes cleaning cat tray much easier. The most effective way of using clay litter is: do allow clay to absorb cat urea for at least 30 minutes before it is removed. Some brands do great job at absorbing urea and smell, some absorbs in seconds, some take longer time. The quality determines the price, normally good clay litter is more expensive.

One of the good brand that you could find in Malaysia (more common) is 'Ever Clean'. It clamps at seconds and it does not produce much dust.

Talking about dust, well... the only problem with clay litter is (my personal opinion) it traps in my cats' paws and they bring the sand all over the house. Ended up I have to vacuum the floor every day and mop it every two days.

Some claimed clay litter is not good for cat's health as inhaling too much of dust may actually cause them to have respiration problem. Some also believe the chemical contains in clay litter may affect both cat and human's health.

I still prefer clay litter. Reason: I clean my cats' tray very often. As long as I am at home, I will scoop and throw away the clamped litter after they use their toilet. This will keep their toilet clean and fresh all time.

Crystal Cat Litter
The price of crystal litter is a little bit higher than clay litter, however it won't crash and it won't cause the whole house to be dusty. The absorption power is more powerful than clay. The only disadvantage is crystal litter won't clamp. Therefore most owner who chooses crystal litter won't removed used litter very often, it is normally thrown away and change every week, depends on how heavy is the usage.

I bought this once. It's really good, no dust, but can't scoop. Without clamping and scooping, the cost may not be that economical since everything has to be thrown away more frequently.

Pine Pallets
This is another good choice of cat litter. No dust, smells good, good absorption, biodegradable, price is reasonable. The only disadvantage is: it won't clamp and it can't be scooped.

Besides clay litter, my cats are using pine pallets too. Unfortunately both Kusky and Kurimu will only pee on it, but when comes to doing 'big business', they prefer to use clay litter. Not sure why, most probably is due to clay is better in covering their feces/poo.

Cat owners often ask this question: how much litter should I put in the tray for my cats? The best quantity is 6-10cm depth.
