On Your Travel

A cat owner may have to leave home temporary due to work or going for a vacation. In that case, you may consider the following methods to settle your cat:

Leaving Cat At Home
Cat could be leaved alone at home for up to maximum 3 days. You will have to ensure a large full bowl of water and dry food are prepared for him/her. However not all cats are comfortable to be leaved alone for more than a day. Some of them may feel anxious, stress and upset when their routine is changed. If you are a TV person and you watch TV a lot at home, you may consider to on the TV while you are a way for a few days. This create a perception for your cat that you are at home. One cat may feel lonely, but if you have more than 1, they could accompany each other while you are not around.

The Pet Sitter
In some urban city, there are services called 'pet sitter'. You may call a pet sitter to your house to look after your cat at home. Is best to check the background of the pet sitter before hiring one. It's best to arrange the pet sitter to visit your house and meet your cat before hiring them. Watch how the pet sitter interact with your cat and take that opportunity to assess his/her ability in taking care of your cat. You should also be sensitive enough to see whether your cat is comfortable to interact with the pet sitter.

Boarding or Cat Hotel
Now a day, you may find lots of cat hotel or cat boarding services in every where in Malaysia. It's important to find a quality boarding service. Some boarding services puts cats in normal portable cages, some have build-up cages for cats with lots of space for cats to move around. I strongly suggest you should visit the boarding once before deciding where to put leave your cat for temporary foster. Make sure you observe the hygiene of the center, how the shop owner interact and treat the cats & etc. A good boarding service or cat hotel will definately do this:
1. check if you have vaccinated your cat and will require you to show the vaccination record.
2. will ask for your cat's vet contact, just in case if anything happens to your cat while you are not around.
3. will allow your cat to bring along his/her toys and some belonging to the boarding center/cat hotel.

Travel with You
Another alternative that you may consider is to bring your cat along while you are traveling. Cats could get panic easily in the car if they are not expose to such experience since they were very young. You cat could be trained to travel with you in the car. I will bring Kusky and Kurimu back with me if I am going back to home town. I don't think they enjoy it, Kurimu will be meowing non-stop for the first hour of journey, Kusky who normally wont like to be hold in the arm will automatically seek for my lap when the car is moving. Many people recommended why not use tranquilizer, that is very my option.

If you have to travel by air, please ensure which is the airline that permits passenger to bring animals on board. As far as I understand, Malaysia Airline (MAS) is the only airline provide such service. The charges for boarding a cat on an airplane is equivalent to the charges of luggage. Meaning your cat will be wight and you need to pay ticket for your cat according to his/her weight. Some airline has specific compartment in cargo for animals, some do allow owner to place the carrier below the seat. In Malaysia, you will have to show vaccination and medical record of your cat to the airline authority. It's also essential for you to get an official verification letter from public animal department (government body) to proof your cat is healthy and does not carry any diseases.
